This year's trip began at Watchman Electric campsite, Zion National Park. Beautiful weather as usual.
The next morning we were off to the Angel's Landing trailhead for the first warm-up hike of the trip.
This cactus and flowers were typical of vegetation in the area.
After an hour or two of hiking, the final ascent was in view.
Fortunately, as we got closer, it didn't seem quite as intimidating. Gord assured me it would be easy with the chains.
Here's Gord approaching now.
I'm uneasy around steep trails and cliffs. Gord was happy to lead the way.
The colour of the rock was beautiful, especially in the morning light.
Getting steeper.
Can be difficult to get your hands around the chain.
Panoramic shot looking north from Angels' Landing. Two or three others were on the peak with a large group of British students on the way.
Looking south towards our campsite.
After a half hour break for a snack, it was time to head back down.
Zooming in a little. The trail gets a bit close to the edge for my taste.
Which side of the chain would you walk on?
The trail runs through a sheltered canyon. Not too hot out of the shade.
Noticed this guy while sitting ing the car at the entrance to Zion store.
Next day we headed out to Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce National Park. On the way to Bryce we passed through Red Canyon.
Bryce was spectacular. I'd love to go back and hike amoungst the Hoodoos. This compressed panorama doesn't do it justice.
This formation looked like a castle to me.
